Trojan Horse Development

the ideology of the trojan horse is a major theme for the development of ads4 assignment 3 . the adaptation of camouflage and something not being what it really is came into serious consideration for the design process....

after visiting the site, i was confronted with a very interesting neighbourhood with neighbouring properties having a distinguished commercial, factory style to them with several grafiti pieces spread throughout..

in order to comply with the camouflage ideology, i decided to continue the industrial style where i adapted it as a large wall infront of the house with a modern garage door bleeding through. i felt that this would not affect the design of the house itself but would act as 'camouflage' to the public where the house would not interupt the distinct industrial style.

further in my development of the design, i wanted to continue with my second accessment where i played with the theme of 'a space within a space' where the twelve units would appear twice throughout the design, in each space.

for this, i used my neighbours building where it would act as the space within a space and also acting towards the trojan horse where the other design acts as the camouflage. the facade of the house also allows one to comprehend this ideology, where it folds around itself giving it an appearance of spaces within spaces.

submisson 1

the concept behind my designs was only influenced by the characteristics of arvid. the agrophobic tendencies, insominiac behaviour and social alienation all binded together to produce a simple, yet methaphorically dark design where images are insufficient to describe it.

the act of loneliness, best portrayed in edward hopper (coincidence... i think not) paintings, allowed for me to manifest this throughout my design where arvid's residence is devided into two different sectors. one which he occupies during daylight and another during the night. his agrophobia does not allow himself to enjoy the daylight therefore arvid retreats into in completely insolated, dark, congested partition of the designs where he feels most comfortable. within these partitions of the designs are towers where arvid can get an understanding of the surroundings above him by looking directly up at the sky and not looking directly at neighbouring spaces.....

the second partition of the designs are a place where arvid inhabits primarily during polar night and nightfall..... these sections of the design are walled spaces but heavily glazed where the darkness flows through and promotes that sense of security for arvid. these spaces are predominantly more open to the surroundings but still bring forward the important feelings of loneliness, security and maintain his agrophobic tendencies....
concept 1
here i played with the ideology of an underground nebula
for my character to retreat during daylight.

concept the idea of playing with different spaces for different occasions was againused in this design where one section is used strictly during polar night and a deviding court yard seperates this for the partition used strictly during daylight.

character [re]development

arvid löfgren, an 87 year old swedish war veteran.... he lasted only 3 days, in which he lost 1 arm and 1 leg in a german bombardment on his platoon. He was returned from his service to his hometown of Kiruna where he opted for a scientific breakthrough surgery where his limbs would be replaced with mechanical prosthetics. after many complications with his new mechanically engineered limbs, especially with social alienation, arvid fell insomiac, depressed and with a severe case of agoraphobia.

many years passed, arvid's condition only got worst. his recognition has a war veteran was forgotten, his friends and family didn't want to be associated with a so called 'freak'. arvid's manic depression often leading him to suicidal outbreaks, insomnia so severe days passed where sleep was non-existent.... arvid was going crazy. his agoraphobic tendencies eventually led him to solitary confinement where he prisoned himself in his small encapsulated cottage.

december 13 to january 5 are the days arvid looks forward to the most, polar night.... these are the only days he would leave his solitary confinement of his lodgement... eternal darkness was his best and only friend. arvid would leave his cottage during the quiet times of the day and stalk unsuspected victims. from 1952 to 1998, an average of 8 people per year were declared missing during the polar night season. to this day, these misterious dissapearance are still unsolved and arvid löfgren is still an unknown....

in the eyes of hejduk

30 // hopper

" He removed the gold watch from his vest pocket and clicked open the casing as she let her robe fall to the floor. He cleans his brushes with a soft cloth as he sits on the edge of the bed. He glances at the sheets as she turns her head to the morning light coming through the window as the breeze blows the lace curtain inward. He thinks of France and she of Providence."

44_hopper // character development

44 _ hopper - hopper's structure

21:54:13 - nothing is coming to mind, life's a blur at the moment, particularly hopper.... what is this... is it fictional... diagramatic... phylosophical... again, life's a blur

21:57:29 - "... one destined for a definite programmatic life, but now a luxurious experience." "UNKNOWN" "monstrous beast" "effect"

22:01:57 - hop.per \ 'hap-er\ n (13c) 1 a: one that hops b: a leaping insect; specif : an immature hopping form of an insect 2 [fr. the shaking motion of hoppers used to feed grain into a mill] a: a usu. funnel-shaped receptacle for delivering material (as grain or coal); also : any of various other receptacles for the temporary storage of material b: a freight car with a floor sloping to one or more hinged doors for discharging bulk materials -- called also hopper car c: a box in which a bill to be considered by a legislative body is dropped d: a tank holding liquid and having a device for releasing its contents through a pipe.

when taking into account the obvious outlook at the word/character of hopper and it's structure, one can look no further than the dictionary.... structurally, hopper has a potential...
a: the anatomic structure of a leaping insect....
b: the mechanical/motional structure of a mills hopper, funnel shaped receptacle....
c: the engineerical structure of discharging hinges, releasing devices, etc....

22:19:08 - step 1 : forget the book "berlin night", and strictly focus on hopper as a word/character

from the obvious interpretation of hoppers structure the mechanical/anatomical/motional/engineerical possibilities are chaotic and endless... a mutation, a monstrous beast, the unknown.... will be manipulated into something beautiful.....

22:31:43 - hopper, is a genetically modified species moulded from the forms mechanical/anatomical/motional/engineerical objects identified above... he is the only one of his kind, nocturnus of night, solitary confinement is no stranger... myth is most oftened defined of hopper, those who knew are no longer, what happened is still mysteriously undertermined....

Nevermind! But what about this??

BERLIN NIGHT
John Hejduk

Hejduk leads us into the space of amazement and imagination–the chora of poetic thought, the liminal space of the feast and the game.—Wim van den Bergh

For an American architect John Hejduk's architecture is a world of history, emotions, practical ingenuity and visions of the future. In his view, new buildings too must be the bearers of inspiration and narratives. He gives voice to this contention with extensive explorations and peerless sign language. The essay with which the publication opens, by the dutch architect Wim van den Bergh, indicates how Hejduk's work leads to the essence of architecture.

Published to coincide with the opening of the new building of the Netherlands Architecture Institute. The exhibition Verschoven Fundamenten/Adjusting Foundations, The Work of John Hejduk, Architect was opened on this occassion, among others.Designed by Piet Gerards bno, Heerlen.
